Lewandowski (not the footbal player)

by | jul 1, 2023 | Short Stay

One of my guests, Łukasz Lewandowski, shared a captivating story about the origins of the Lewandowski surname, tracing back to the year 1310. This tale revolves around Bartholomew Levantes, a humble blacksmith whose name, meaning “declaring at baptism,” marks a significant moment in Polish history. Bartholomew had the honor of being present at the baptism of Casimir III the Great, a notable Polish king, in the village of Kowal. This remarkable event took place in Bartholomew’s modest country cottage and was officially documented, leading to Bartholomew being known as Levantes. This nickname, commemorated on a monument to King Casimir in Kowal, signifies the beginning of the Lewandowski lineage.

Bartholomew’s role in this baptism granted him not only noble rights but also established the Lewandowski family emblem. Luke Lewandowski, my guest, is the penultimate heir of this longstanding family tree, with his son being the last direct descendant of Bartholomew Levantes. Despite the privileges and wealth granted by King Casimir to Bartholomew, the Lewandowski family today views their noble ancestry as a prestigious, yet symbolic legacy, given Poland’s current lack of monarchy.

Casimir III the Great, renowned for his exceptional leadership, advanced Poland from the Wooden to the Stone Age. Known as the “Peasants’ King,” Casimir’s humble beginnings in a blacksmith’s house shaped his empathy toward his subjects, as he would often disguise himself as a peasant to understand their daily struggles.

Today, the Lewandowski descendants reside in Wieluń, a town fortified by Casimir III the Great in the Middle Ages. Łukasz feels a profound connection to this historical figure and aspires to erect a monument in Casimir’s honor within his lifetime as a tribute to their remarkable family history.

However, Wieluń also bears a somber significance as the place where World War II began on September 1, 1939, with a devastating Luftwaffe bombing. Lacking any military targets, the attack on Wieluń—particularly on its hospital—highlighted the tragic and brutal nature of the war’s onset. Though over eight decades have passed, the memory of this event remains vivid among the town’s inhabitants, who commemorate it annually to honor the lives lost. This historical backdrop adds depth to the Lewandowski family’s narrative, intertwining personal heritage with significant moments in Polish history.
